THE VILLA EXARCHIA RESIDENCY

The Villa Exarchia Residency Progam offers artists, academics and creatives from all walks of life with lodging, facilities and an exhibition. This unique urban residency program focuses upon craft, theory and cultural engagement with exciting possibilities for networking with other creative practitioners throughout Greece. The location in Athens is central, providing residents with access to the Acropolis, the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion, and many nearby museums and galleries. The Villa Exarcheia Residency spaces are located in the neighbourhood of Neapoli-Exarchia, just minutes by foot from Athens center and the Acropolis. The residency provides time and space for artists, academics and creatives to immerse themselves in Athenian life and perfect their practice. The residency features studio space, facilities, mentoring, and an exhibition.

We recognise that residents have different needs, so we provide three different types of residency packages :

  • The Light Residency which is optimised for researchers.

  • A Full Residency which features a two week residency.

  • The “Locals Only” accelerator residency which is designed to promote Greek artists and graduating students.

  • A discount is applied for all residency types for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) artists, academics and creatives, please refer to the application form for rates.

An Athens-based curator works with each resident, providing support for research, practice and onsite community projects. The curator will be in discussion with the artists throughout their residency in order to provide a rounded collaboration and an opportunity to further your practice in Greece and beyond. Technical assistance and advice is provided, and artists are encouraged to experiment with new materials and methods thanks to a dedicated production facility for metal, ceramics and woodworking.

Local networking opportunities and contacts are also provided as Phoenix Athens is equitably engaged with other local organisations in the community.

Proposals for this opportunity are reviewed on a rolling basis. We welcome couples, curator-artist teams and academic researchers. Please be sure to specify in your application if you wish to apply as a team. The program currently features accommodations for up to three residents at a time.

Please note that each year, at least one artist or curator is invited for one month in exchange for a public workshop or presentation. We welcome proposals for both local and international collaborations and exchanges.
